??? Aloe Vera: Gel vs. Juice?

Finding good, pure aloe gel here is a bit like pulling teeth. I know of two that work well, but they're both expensive for only a small quantity; the Aubrey Organics Aloe Vera which is 10.34 with shipping for 118ml, and this one on eBay which is 9.45 with shipping for 114ml. I really like what they both do for my hair, but the price per ml is hard to swallow. I tried the Holland & Barrett AVG too, no luck; even with sieving and whisking, the lumps made it problematic to use in SMTs and hair recipes generally.

So, I'm looking for alternatives. I came across Aloe Pura Aloe Vera Juice, 1000ml for 9.30 with shipping. (Holland and Barrett sell it too, here's a link, but it's 2 more.)

    Here's the ingredients:
Aloe Vera Juice, Antioxidant, Ascorbic acid, Preservatives: Potassium Sorbate.

It's meant to be diluted to be taken as a supplement, but I'm wondering if this would work for hair? I don't need it to be gel-like at all, so it's no loss for it to be its natural runny self. I'm also not worried about it needing refrigerating; my hair stuff has already claimed one of the fridge's door shelves, and in a bungalow it's not as it's a long walk. If it would work this could save me a lot of headaches!

tl;dr: Aloe vera juice instead of aloe vera gel - yay or nay?

    Hiya Keyholes!

So far, I've tried a number of different aloe gels and juices in the last 4 years. I did find out the FOTE was the best in terms of build up and the juices caused crazy build up for me even after clarifying (I use it like a conditioner and rinse it out now instead of the whole HALO rinse thing that made my hair feel crunchy). Now, I am not exactly sure why this happened as I wash with soapnuts and clarify with diluted rhassoul sometimes, but all the juices made my hair feel as though it was doll hair basically; sort of plastic-y and weird. This may not be the issue for you, however, different strokes for different folks, right?

Ahh, your hair. It's SO pretty!

    Thank you so much!

Build-up's something I've not considered at all, eep. I'm wondering if it'd be okay in a mixture with other things (ie. honey, conditioner, etc.)? I also use diluted ALES shampoo now and then, in between CO washes, which might help keep it at bay.

Hmm, I think I might give it a try, and hope I don't end up with a plasticy effect.

Mountain Rose Herbs sells a very nice aloe vera gel for a good price--16 oz (473 ml) for $5.75. They do ship internationally, but I don't know what their rates are. I've used their various products for years and have always been pleased, though I wish they would sell a smaller amount of coconut oil than 32 oz.

Their seasoning blends are good too.
We're all mad here. And here. And here. But not here.

Thanks for the tip 13! I had a look, shipping their 8oz. AVG to the UK would mean it was 11.17 for 227 ml, so an improvement definitely. I'm trying to find something I can source closer to home, but I've bookmarked that if I don't have any luck.

A little update: I tried an SMT with the aloe juice the night before last. It does make for a much runnier SMT, especially given I tried it with quite a thin conditioner, so it was trickier to apply. But it works! Beautifully so. My hair was very happy afterwards, and the moisture seems to have lasted better too. I think I may have found the solution to my aloe sourcing woes!

Keyholes, please can you stop enabling me. After reading recent threads, I already bought Camellia oil today because of you and Miranda.

Now where did you buy this Juice from in the end?

Sorry Kimki, you're doomed. I got it from an Amazon Marketplace seller, here, specifically New Health Care since they were the cheapest (with delivery) at the time. I hope you like the camellia oil!

Thanks little_cherry, I'll keep an eye for build-up and report back if it becomes an issue.

I missed this thread first time around.

I use aloe vera juice as a rinse during my once-a-month shampoo bar wash, or anytime I've managed to get stuck out in the sun without hat or parasol. I just take a cup full of it into the shower and after washing with shampoo bar, I rinse well, then dunk my ends into the AV juice, squeeze it back into the cup as I remove my ends, then pour the whole cup over my head so it soaks my entire length. I rinse it out, then follow with my favorite coney conditioner ears down, rinse, then my usual ACV rinse which I don't rinse out. It makes my hair very soft and shiny. All the other weeks of the month, I CO, followed by coney condish ears down and ACV rinse.
